In one of the best-known Inca origin traditions, Manco Cápac and Mama Ocllo emerge from Lake Titicaca and travel in search of a place where a golden staff will sink into the earth. When it finally does, they establish their home in the Cusco valley and begin teaching the people who gather around them.
